About the film
Director: Ron Howard
Actors: Woody Harrelson, Paul Bettany, Emilia Clark, Alden Ehrenreich, Donald GloverScience fiction and westerns go hand in hand and oh boy director Ron Howard knows this.
Solo: A Star Wars Story is big and fun, full of wonderfully executed tropes and fantastic chases, heists, and battles. This is the most fun we’ve had in this far, far away galaxy for a long time.
Alden Ehrenreich is positively charming in the title role, absolutely owning Hans Solo and Empire Strikes Back screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan brings his A-game to the script reliving the glory days of adventurous popcorn flicks. And from start to finish, he doesn’t slow down.
Ehrenreich is joined by Woody Harrelson as one of Han’s early mentors in the criminal underworld, Beckett; Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke as Han’s childhood friend, Qi’ra; and the red-hot Donald Glover as accomplished smuggler Lando Calrissian (originally played by the suave Billy Dee Williams). The film also casts Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Han’s future copilot and Wookiee ally, who was originally portrayed by Peter Mayhew.
It’s a prequel with enough dutiful connective tissue to keep the Star Wars fans enraptured, but this Star Wars movie is uncomplicated in the best possible way and you won’t hear a saccharine speech about “The Force”.
This is the best kind of Star Wars movie.
