Evil Does Not Exist

The meditative new film from Japanese master-director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car). Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) and his daughter Hana live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. One day, the village inhabitants become aware of a plan to build a camping site near Takumi’s house offering city residents a comfortable ‘escape’ to nature much to the villagers’ displeasure. Hamaguchi’s quiet, enigmatic eco-parable refuses easy explanations. It’s a complex drama whose very title points the way towards the idea that there are shades of grey in every judgment we make.
