Opéra de Paris: Don Giovanni
Opéra de Paris: Don Giovanni
New Production! Who is Don Juan, known in Mozart’s opera as Don Giovanni? The question remains unanswered, for this figure – sometimes a “great lord and wicked man”, sometimes a seducer or a predator – resists definition. In his opera with librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte, Mozart leaves the character’s contradictions unresolved, forging the myth through expressive power and depth. The story follows the unrepentant nobleman, sung by baritone Peter Mattei, whose pursuit of pleasure ensnares servants, aristocrats and lovers with fatal consequences. From the overture and the catalogue aria to the climactic dinner with the Commendatore, this dramma giocoso leaves no one unmoved. For her Paris debut, Louisa Proske sets the action in a grand hotel, where social structures can be transgressed and fantasies surface.
